Riding Smart, Riding Safe: Toronto’s Latest E-Bike Enforcement Campaign

As e-bikes and other electric rideables become increasingly prevalent on Toronto streets, public safety is top of mind. Last fall, the Toronto Police Service launched the two-week “Safe Streets, Safe Roads” traffic enforcement campaign to address rising incidents involving micromobility devices. This initiative focused on curbing unsafe behaviors—like speeding, helmet avoidance, and riding prohibited devices such as e‑scooters—and has paved the way for greater awareness and compliance.

Riders caught breaking the law—such as speeding, or riding without a helmet—faced fines starting at $90, with even higher penalties for more serious violations.

New Campaign: Safety Through Rhymes

Building on the blitz, the City of Toronto has launched a creative, rhyme-based public education push aimed at e-bike users. Clever lines like:

  • “You’ve got wheels. They’ve got heels. Don’t ride on the sidewalk.”

  • “Riding the wrong way in the bike lane grinds everyone’s gears.”

  • “It’s a real pain when you stop in the bike lane.”

  • “If it takes gas, it moves too fast for the bike lane.”

…deliver safety reminders with playful flair.  These messages not only target riders but also alert food‑delivery companies to share these friendly reminders with their couriers.

Why This Matters for Riders (and EZ Rides Fans)

  • Safety First – E‑bikes are a fantastic way to get around—but must be ridden sensibly. Always wear a helmet, obey traffic signals, and stay in permitted zones like roads or bike lanes—not sidewalks.
    • E‑bikes are allowed for riders 16 years and older, must stay on roads or bike lanes, and headwear is mandatory.

    • Maximum assisted speed must not exceed 32 km/h, and typical provincial rules must be followed.

Pro Tips from EZ Rides for Staying on the Right Track

Tip

Why It Matters

Always helmet up

A helmet is your first line of defense—period.

Ride predictably

Avoid weaving between cars or rolling stops—even minor missteps can lead to serious harm.

Stay legal, stay safe

Stick to roads or bike lanes—never sidewalks or multi-use paths.

Follow the city’s signs & rhymes

Pay attention to playful (yet important) reminders—share them with your fellow riders!

Report or educate

See someone riding illegally? A friendly reminder can go a long way—or gently direct them to official resources on city rules.

Final Thoughts

Toronto’s strategy blending enforcement and creative education reminds all riders: e-biking is awesome—but only when done responsibly.
