Before you buy · Folding scooters

Will it fit in my car?

Folded size is only half the answer. The other half is who lifts it, how high, and how often. Measure once, then check which of our folding scooters fit.

The short answer

Measure the trunk opening, not just the floor, and compare it with the scooter's folded size. Then check the heaviest piece you'll lift and who will lift it. A scooter that fits but is too heavy to lift ends up staying in the garage.

  • Lightest lifts The Heartway S11 Zen+ comes apart, and its heaviest piece is listed at 38 lb (17 kg).
  • Folds itself The Heartway Transit 4 and S26 fold electrically, with a remote or a button.
  • Folds by hand, battery comes out The Eclipse EV Nova Fly folds to 99 × 59 × 51 cm and weighs 25 kg (55 lb).

Measure your trunk in two minutes

Open the trunk or hatch and take five measurements with a tape measure. Keep this page open on your phone and use the checker below.

The opening is often smaller than the floor inside, especially on sedans, so measure both. If you'll fold the rear seats down, measure again with them folded.

A car trunk from behind with the hatch open: A opening width, B opening height, C lip height from the ground, E gap between the wheel arches From behind, hatch open A B E C The same car from the side: D floor depth, from the back of the rear seat to the lip From the side Rear seat D
  1. Opening width at the narrowest point, often near the top.
  2. Opening height from the lip to the top of the opening.
  3. Lip height from the ground. This is how high you lift.
  4. Floor depth from the back of the rear seat to the lip.
  5. Between the wheel arches, usually the narrowest part of the floor.

Check which ones fit

Enter your measurements. We compare them with each scooter's folded size from our product pages and try every way it could lie in the trunk.

A rough check using listed folded sizes. Real trunks have curves, lips and wheel arches, so if it's close, bring your numbers to a showroom or call us.

What you'd actually lift

Total weight isn't always what you lift. Take-apart scooters split into pieces, so the heaviest piece is the number that matters. For scale, the dashed line is 23 kg (50 lb), a common airline limit for one checked suitcase.

23 kg (50 lb): a common checked-suitcase limit

Weights as listed on each product page. Lifting from the ground over a trunk lip is harder than lifting a suitcase, so try a similar weight first.

Takes apart, folds by hand, or folds itself

Splits into pieces by hand, so each lift is lighter. You'll handle several pieces each trip and put them back together at the other end.

Folds itself

Heartway Transit 4, Heartway S26

Transit 4: 40 lb, rolls like a suitcase when folded. S26: 73 lb with battery.

Before you buy: the lift check

  1. Measure A to E Including with the rear seats folded, if you'll do that.
  2. Check the heaviest lift Not the total weight: the heaviest single piece.
  3. Know who lifts it You, your parent, or both? Every trip, at both ends.
  4. Try the weight Lift a bag of a similar weight from the ground over the trunk lip.
  5. Think two years ahead Will the person lifting it still be comfortable doing it then?
  6. Consider a vehicle hoist If lifting is the only problem, a hoist fitted to the car may solve it.

Questions we get asked

Do I still have to lift it after it folds?
Yes, unless you have a hoist. Folding makes it smaller, not lighter. Self-folding models fold themselves, but you still lift them into the trunk.
What's lighter to lift: taking apart or folding?
Taking apart usually means lighter lifts, but more pieces. The S11 Zen+'s heaviest piece is listed at 38 lb, while the Nova Fly lifts as one 55 lb piece.
Will it fit a sedan?
Often, but sedan openings are smaller than the trunk floor. Measure the opening and use the checker above. Hatchbacks and SUVs usually have bigger openings but a higher lip to lift over.
Can the battery come out?
The Nova Fly lists a removable lithium battery. For other models, check the product page or ask us.
How far do folding scooters go?
Listed ranges: Nova Fly up to 30 km, S11 Zen+ 20 km, S26 18 km and Transit 4 11 km. Real range is shorter with a heavier rider, hills and cold.
Can I see how it folds before I buy?
Yes. Visit a showroom and ask a specialist to fold it for you, then try the lift yourself. Call ahead to check it's on display.
Do I need a licence?
It depends on the device and where you live. Confirm with your municipality or provincial transportation authority before you buy. Check your local rules first.
